Doctoral Studies
Doctoral studies are based on an individual study plan under the guidance of a supervisor and evaluated by a committee. The individual study plan consists of a study and scientific part, it is drawn up by the supervisor and approved by the committee.

Evangelical Lutheran Theology - graduate profile
Graduate profile:
A graduate of the doctoral studies has knowledge of research methods in the areas of evangelical lutheran theology (Old Testament, New Testament, Church History, Systematic Theology, Practical Theology, Philosophy and Religious studies). He is capable of independent research and bringing his own solutions to problems in the field of evangelical theology.
Theoretical knowledge:
- knows the principles of research
- is capable of independent research and bringing own solutions to problems.
Practical skills:
- is able to analyze the current state and trends of the latest research and apply its results to solving current problems.
Additional knowledge:
- can systematically cooperate with related fields of study.
Graduate application:
A graduate of a doctoral study knows the current state of research in the field of evangelical lutheran theology according to his focus in its biblical, systematic-theological and church-historical contexts, with regard to the theology and practice of the Evangelical Church in Slovakia, or wider ecumenical contexts. The graduate of the doctoral studies is able to apply the acquired knowledge in an innovative way to solve urgent questions in the field of evangelical lutheran theology, spiritual life and spirituality in the context of Christian traditions. He is able to present analyzes and professional solutions to theological problems in the context of relations between the church and society. The graduate is methodologically prepared, capable of critical thinking, can work as a teacher in schools, as an independent researcher in educational and research institutions founded by Christian churches, and in state institutions in the field of culture and spiritual life.
Dissertation examination and Defense of the dissertation
Dissertation examination
In accordance with the valid study regulations of the Comenius University, the doctoral student registers for the dissertation examination:
-in a daily form no later than 18 months after the start of studies,
-in an external form no later than 24 months after the start of the studies.
Along with the application for the dissertation examination, the doctoral student is obliged to submit:
- written work for the dissertation exam in comb binding - 1x,
- written work for the dissertation exam in electronic form via AIS2, unencrypted file.
Application for dissertation examination
Defense of the dissertation
Obtaining at least 60 credits is a condition for granting approval for the dissertation exam. The application for the dissertation examination in written form and the written work for the dissertation examination are submitted to the dean's office, no later than the last possible day of registration for the dissertation examination.
Graduation
The graduation of doctoral students and the issuance of documents on the completion of studies (diploma, supplement to the diploma and state examination certificate) are ensured by the Department of Research and Doctoral Studies at the Rectorate of the Comenius University.
